Godhunter The Godhunter Series Book 1 eBook Amy Sumida

Funny, charming, sweet and action packed! I rarely write reviews, unless a book is extra-ordinary in some way, good or bad. This book is extra-ordinarily good. Vervain has stumbled onto a secret, the Gods are real but they aren't gods. They are Atlanteans who have learned to channel both our worship and our blood sacrifices. Vervain is a refreshing character. She doesn't have a certain Paranormal heroines hang ups that take 17 books to overcome. She is comfortable with who she is. She is a fighter, who has to learn to also be a lover. She is a human who takes on immortals and also entices them. The action scenes are sharp and just the right length. The book is sexy without tipping into the pornographic. Her struggles between the various Gods courting her are at once humorous and touching. Thor is not our Marvel hero but a real version of the Viking God, with all his foibles and nobility. Blue is wonderfully torn between being evil and trying hard to learn to love. Witchcraft is presented well - as a Wiccan, I appreciate that. Her side characters are interesting without being intrusive, I particularly like the depiction of Horus, you can just feel the wounds under his hard candy coated shell. I would however like to see a few more Goddesses presented in a good light. If I could, I would dazzle you with more stars as 5 just doesn't gut it

Godhunter The Godhunter Series Book 1 eBook Amy Sumida Reviews

(read #2)

Yep, I still love this series. Vervain (despite the horrible name) is a snarky, strong, kick-ass character and I love her. Even with all her issues. And that's part of WHY I love the character - she's not perfect. There is clearly some deep-seated trauma related to relationships that she struggles with all the time. That being said...

This is definitely a story that revolves ALL around Vervain. She is the center of the universe and everyone is focused on her and everything that could possibly happen to her will, and does, happen. So there is a little of that special snowflake going on...but I still somehow love her!

Maybe it is because of the humor and fun with which Sumida writes the entire story. Despite some seriously dark, trigger-possible material, GODHUNTER is light, fun, fast-paced, and hellaciously entertaining.

Maybe it's just that I have a tolerance for that, if everything else in the story works, and I like all the characters. Because, let's face it, I am reading paranormal reverse harem romance here folks! I WANT to be swept away and watch a strong, fun heroine overcome every obstacle (eventually) and get every guy she wants ) That's the whole point of the extreme escapism!

And Sumida has written a ton of great characters with depth and complexity and as many foibles and quirks as they have strengths. It makes it very easy to connect with them and care about what is happening.

Even more, the world-building in this series is stellar. Sumida has done a beautiful job of adding the fantastic to our everyday reality in a cohesive, consistent, and believable way. I find the way she has woven myths and gods and stories from so many different cultures together with her story to be fascinating.

And I am so glad there are 22 more books for me to enjoy! (again)

Also note In addition to the trigger-warning, there is also a lot of sex in the series, but it is not explicit. Sumida manages to find a way to include it all, with plenty of romantic feels, but without great detail. Each scene employs euphemisms and romantic metaphor to let the reader know what is happening without spelling it all out. Or she employs fade-to-black implication. So really, just beware of the kidnap/abuse/mind-rape/rape angles that show up here in nearly every book.

<i>UPDATE NOTES
64% Sigh...I absolutely detest what Blue has done (*shudder*), and I hate romanticized rape. But I also love a good redemption story. So I am SO conflicted about Blue.
“When I saw your strength tempered by kindness,” he continued relentlessly, “your passion for your art, your search for beauty in all things, your determination to fight for your race even though you fear it will turn you into a monster, your effort to train yourself to be strong but retain the femininity you love, all the conflict and glory of you, I was overwhelmed. I didn’t stand a chance.”

64% Sigh...kind of a bummer because I like Finn. More than Thor.
"I caught his gaze and the intensity of it scared me. There was something there that I’d have to deal with someday and I wasn’t looking forward to it. I had a feeling he wouldn’t take the friend speech well. I partially blamed myself for encouraging him with the swan thing -insert sigh here-. Just as long as he didn't turn into a bush-lurking stalker, I'd be fine. I narrowed my eyes on him in consideration. Maybe I'd better trim the hedges around my yard."

63% BEST LINE EVER! I think I am stealing it ) "There was a bit more sand in my hourglass."
"I’ve waited forever for a man to call me tiny and give me that hand-spanning, romance novel line. My waist is small in comparison to the rest of me, I definitely have an hourglass figure, but in comparison to women's waists in general, it wasn’t all that little. There was a bit more sand in my hourglass."

47.0% Talk about romantic speeches! This one from Thor to Vervain is a doozy. SUCH a lovely lighthouse metaphor. But I can't help feel it's as much about her power as who she is. Which is kind of a bummer, and a worry for the future of this relationship. Wonder if he really sees her.

37% Vervain's relationship to magic and the ability to kill gods - nice metaphor.
“You have more magic than the average human and you know how to use it, how to manipulate it and direct it. You're a lighthouse shining through the darkness, calling it home.”

30.0% LMFAO. Hilarious!
"One of the boulders actually had a lid which lifted to reveal a toilet. Very ingenious but also very frustrating if you happened to be a person unaccustomed to searching for a toilet inside rocks. I had actually wondered for a few confused moments if maybe gods didn’t share our bodily functions."

25% Awesome line!
"In real life, you gotta save yourself and the only happy endings are the ones paid for in massage parlors."

12% LMFAO! That's awesome.
"...fast manly hug. You know the quick grab, pat hard, and let go kind of hug that says I must care a lot about this guy because I’m touching him but let’s get this clear…I’m sooo not gay."

5% Honestly...this is the best beach description EVER!
"Sand sticks to you like an alien fungus that believes you’re its only hope of survival. Wet or dry it will attach itself to any part of your anatomy it can reach and those cool ocean breezes everyone loves so much? They are in cahoots with the vicious, alien-fungus sand and will happily fling a fine mist of the powdery annoyance all over you while simultaneously lulling you to sleep with its salt-laced caresses. Result? You wake up hours later to find not only has your sunblock died defending you but you’re now coated with a thin layer of sand, saltwater, and suntan lotion that has dried to a sticky crust. After you painfully scrape away the crust, you’ll find the red glow of your newly crisped skin beneath. The beach is evil, I tell you, evil."
I have read all of the books in Amy's Godhunter series and they are all fantastic! If you've been looking for a new author to obsessively read, you've come to the right place. There are nine books so far, and I can tell you they are all well worth buying. Vervain's life is fascinating and outrageous. She is a sympathetic character you can relate to who develops into a multi-faceted, even more kick-ass character over the course of the series. At the height of her power, she is still lovable and vulnerable, never losing the important parts of her humanity. And her men, whew! Well, you'll just have to read to find out ;-) The Godhunter series is a hidden gem in a sea of dreck. Don't pass it by! (And if you're wondering, no, I don't know Amy Sumida and no, I wasn't paid for this review.) The series really is that awesome.
I had to tap out at 11%. It was just immature AF, and this is from someone who reads YA regularly.

That aside, though, here were the reasons I tapped out.
1. The whole introduction to how Vervain became the Godhunter isn't explained terribly well. A dude tried to kill her on behalf of a god. She kills the dude and the god. Then, she decides to rifle through the god's stuff and thus, her new path is chosen. ...whuuu?

2. "A woman should look like a woman." (In re the Vervain not being "ripped.") What, pray tell, does a ~woman look like, exactly? If a female doesn't fall within certain parameters in terms of how she looks is she not a woman? So there was strike two.

3. "...a striking Indian man standing before us (Indian with a dot not a feather)." Um...wooooowwwww. Really? How has the author not edited that racist shit yet? And it's apparent she knows she can differentiate by simply saying Indian and Native American as she goes on to describe two other gods as Native American. So this line was a throwaway designed to be clever, I guess, and all it did was convince me to go ahead and close the book and choose to spend my time on other stuff.

Unlimited has too many quality books for me to waste time on bigoted garbage.
