The Influential Author How and Why to Write Publish and Sell Nonfiction Books that Matter edition by Gregory Diehl Tom Morkes Religion Spirituality eBooks
I was already a fan of Diehl's books before I bought this one, but it's in a league of its own. It's like he sat down and wrote every POSSIBLE bit of information a nonfiction author might need to know, to guarantee (as much as one can) a successful nonfiction book.
I'm traditionally published and an indie author/publisher. I've been writing both fiction & nonfiction since forever. So, I figured this book would be a nice, light review of things I already knew. I might even pick up a few tips.
Umm... no. It's FAR more than that.
Diehl delves deep into all KINDS of aspects of nonfiction, from why nonfiction books even exist (and why you might write one), to who reads it (and why).
And, along the way, he shares insights that were BIG "ah-HA!" moments for me.
This should be a university textbook. Seriously, if aspiring authors read this before even trying to write a nonfiction book, it'd improve their odds of success... well, exponentially.
So, I want to stress that this IS a very thorough book.
And that's one reason* why this is a four-star review: This isn't one of those "breeze through it in an evening" books with some good tips here & there. This is a detailed, soup-to-nuts book that will take many hours to read. And even more to digest, because Diehl definitely challenges the reader.
He not only explores the essence of nonfiction, he goes through the entire researching, writing, and publishing process. He even covers what to do AFTER publishing and promoting your book... like what to do if your book isn't a success (and how you might reframe your definition of "success"). And - if your book is a success (which it should be, if you follow his advice) - he explains how you might want to revisit your views of yourself (and your social narrative) as an authority.
All of this is the tip of the iceberg. It's also why some readers will want to own this book in print, to highlight and jot notes in the margin.
On the other hand, if you're looking for a quick read and a get-rich-quick view of nonfiction books, this isn't the book for you.
Instead, if you're serious about success in nonfiction, I think this book is a MUST-read... and possibly the only (or at least best) book you'll need to achieve your nonfiction writing & publishing goals.
*Note: Another reason this is a four-star review is because I'm seeing well-earned five-star reviews from other readers. And, as a book buyer, I'm wary of a string of five-star reviews, in case they're fake. So, I made a point of making this a four-star review, to highlight the fact that, yes, my review IS real. And yes, this IS an amazing book, but only for those who are very serious about writing nonfiction and building a career with it.

The Influential Author How and Why to Write Publish and Sell Nonfiction Books that Matter edition by Gregory Diehl Tom Morkes Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
If you are a non-fiction writer or essayist with a mind to self-publish your work, The Influential Author, by Gregory V. Diehl, is probably a book that should be in your tool kit.
Subtitled “How and Why to Write, Publish, and Sell Nonfiction Books that Matter,” Diehl’s hefty 400-page instructional guide undertakes to not only instruct the potential author in matters of content, strategy, and the technology of the modern digital platform, but to motivate and inspire as well. It is a book that fills a niche for prospective nonfiction writers, as well as veterans of the craft who may not have considered self-publishing.
In doing this, Diehl – a young, peripatetic, self-made publishing and blogging force of nature, does not instruct from a raised dais, but dares to move in close to get into the reader’s head with an intensity those of us who frequently read instructional books don’t see very often. He puts the weight and desire to create a quality product on the reader. You sense that the author suffers no fools and it’s a bit jarring to feel his persona on every page. He’s not only about helping you get a printed work on the page, he works to encourage the nonfiction writer to get above the mosh pit of sub-par nonfiction books that will inevitably get lost in the overburdened world of self-publishing. He wants you to succeed. As the title indicates, this is a book about writing that influences, so all through the pages the reader is encouraged to willingly assume the mantle of an influential writer, to believe that influencing others with words is possible, and that mounting the public stage of influencing others through writing is a worthy undertaking. He uses terms such as “you must” and “you will” and “your message” frequently enough to affect what even the casual reader will glean from Diehl’s enthusiastic teaching. He speaks of “your identity” in creating a nonfiction book – a whole book of words and print and size and cover art – and a reader realizes that Diehl has crafted that exact book as his instructional manual.
The Influential Author leaves few aspects of self-publishing out, with chapters not only on philosophy, strategy and creating the work, but continues by discussing the refinement and physical presentation of the message, promotion and even how you will feel having successfully accomplished the goal and appreciating your destiny as a published author. A reader does not finish this book, so much as graduates from it.
This is very much a guidebook for the 21st century writer, written and composed by a globetrotting author who clearly understands the terrain.
