Natsume Book of Friends Vol 5 Yuki Midorikawa Books
What an excellent series! Few manga books today have piqued my interest such as this one. Recommended by a library friend, I really liked what they told me it was about. Glad I looked into this series as THIS manga series is one of the best! It's very original, creative, heartwarming and funny. Definitely a series I want to collect all volumes to some day. The characters are all really likeable. Midorikawa-sensei really does breath life into her characters to where they could actually be real people, and I enjoy reading her footnotes on it. It's hard to pick a favorite character because they are all so wonderful and unique in their own way. Very few manga have that effect on me I've noticed as I've gotten older. If you are a HUGE fan of youkai, the supernatural, and monsters like I am, then, this is a MUST-READ!Story synopsis: Natsume Takashi has always seen spirits and has been ostracized in the past for it. He is constantly moving from place to place as his unique ability chases people away. Then he learns about his grandmother Natsume Reiko having the same ability and not only that, she has a list of youkai names in what she calls the "Book of Friends." Natsume Takashi soon inherits the strange book and soon youkai from everywhere are either wanting their names back or wanting to use the book for their own selfish gain of wanting to control other youkai. One in particular that crosses paths with him is a very powerful youkai sealed up inside a maneki neko (lucky cat) statue that wants the Book of Friends from Natsume and strikes a deal with him: This particular youkai would be his bodyguard for Natsume and when Natsume dies he can have the Book of Friends.
End synopsis.
This manga is really good and the anime is something you should check out if you really liked this manga like I do. :) I am happy to have this in my library and hope to collect all 18 volumes.

Natsume Book of Friends Vol 5 Yuki Midorikawa Books Reviews
When I first started reading this series, Natsume was a very withdrawn and lonely boy. His ability to see Yokai spirits set him apart from others and caused him problems with his different m multiple Foster Parents. Now he has a stable home, human friends who understand him, and a loyal group of Yokai friends. Things are looking up for Natsume. Still looking forward to more adventures with Takashi Natsume.
In this volume Natsume has two new friends, Tanuma and Taki, who have limited perceptions of the Yokai world. But it is a means to help relieve his loneliness. I hope he can lower his guard and allow them to become true friends. Natsume always worries about others getting hurt because his ability to see the Yokai spirits. The series gets better and better with each volume.
I love how this is the 19th book and Midorikawa can still write such touching stories. The art is lovely as usual. It's just a beautiful series all around.
Natsume is basically a story of lonely hearts set in Japan with Yokai supernatural beings in complex relationships between humans and spirits. Natsume is a nice guy trying to get along day to day in dealing with normal people and the Yokai spirits making life complicated for him. The two do not mesh and therein lies the drama. It all boils down to being kind & decent and not hurting others. That is life in a nutshell.
both 9 and 7 year old girls love these stories. it's their first manga. they mostly read the worriors books, harry potter, things like that. but they love having pictures again. I read one couldn't put it down either.
I love this story. I couldn't help but get emotionally invested in Natsume Takashi and his guardian of sorts, Madara/Nyanko-sensei. Natsume is a lonely, orphaned teen with delicate health who inherited the ability to see and interact with yokai from his grandmother, Natsume Reiko. Because of this he's been shuffled from home to home and ostracized by his peers for being weird. He has also inherited a book with the names of various yokai. His ability and the book have yokai constantly drawn to him causing him both trouble and joy. I would recommend this for someone who enjoys the supernatural genre.
I think if you enjoy anime like Hunter x Hunter, where the focus is more on friendship than anything else, with subplots of conflict and combat, this is a good manga for you! There is less physical combat and more spiritual/emotional in Natsume, but you get progressively more invested in Natsume and the nyanko cat as the story continues. I've read books 1-3 and each has been better than the last. It's not really romantic at all but you get sucked into character's lives in a similar way. The art is also beautiful, and there are frequently "cute" frames of Natsume...which shows the reader a different side of him.
